(November 4, 2008) - In the past few years it seems as though there are always a couple of marquee names that are sitting on the free agent list waiting to get called before the NFL season starts. Names that not too long ago, were some of the very best at their positions, and always beg the question of why can’t these storied players find any work?
One of those names was Daunte Culpepper, the ex-Minnesota Vikings quarterback who put up annual Pro Bowl numbers with the help of the miraculous and former Viking wideout, Randy Moss.
Culpepper saw his career decline in quick form after suffering a serious knee injury which subsequently led to his trade to the Miami Dolphins, which in turn later released him.
Culpepper attempted to resurrect his career last year in a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders but as most players who sign with Oakland, that deal didn’t work out too well for him. Now Culpepper is back at it once again, this time giving it a try for the Detroit Lions after signing a two-year deal with the club on Saturday.
While the Detroit Lions are in no better shape now than the Oakland Raiders were last year, one thing Culpepper can count on that he didn’t have in Miami or Oakland is the aid of another phenomenal wide receiver in Calvin Johnson.
It was always rumored that Moss made Culpepper look much better than he was and his struggles in Miami and Oakland were a direct result of the absence of such a talented wide receiver. The deal with Detroit not only puts Culpepper back in the division where he had his most success as a member of the NFC North, but he also gets the help of another potential Pro Bowl talent albeit on a struggling Lions team. At 31, this may be Culpepper’s last opportunity but he still believes he has the skill set to be a solid starter.
