Leonard Miles celebrated his 70th birthday with a “Toast of Life” recently at the “Sign of The Time Night Club, 139 N. Belnord St. in Baltimore. This is a nice neighborhood club to hang out in.

Jim Hession, musician, bandleader, songwriter, pianist and recording artist, is currently the pianist and arranger for the Sunset Band. Born and raised in Europe, he began playing guitar and drums at age 12. By 19, the influences of Stevie Wonder, Sly and Family Stone, Motown and jazz music drew him to the piano. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Jim became the bandleader for the very successful Central Avenue Band for over 20 years. He’s played with such diverse acts as, Dennis Yost, Ernie Andrews and Herb Kenny. Jim wrote and produced “Trouble in the Moonlight,” his own album of original material, and currently working on his next album, a mix of jazz with Latin influences.

“Satchmo and Baby Dolly,” written by Camay Murphy, directed by Randy Smith and musical director is Warren Wolf; an exciting musical drama about Louis Armstrong and Baltimorean Blanche Calloway, will open at Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Dolphin Street, 7 p.m., Nov. 11 and 2 p.m., Nov. 12. For tickets, call 410-367-4292.

One of the most interesting things coming up is a play called “Satchmo and Baby Dolly.” I even like the name. This is an original play by Camay Murphy and Randy Smith chronicling the relationship between Louis Armstrong and Blanche Calloway amidst the jazz music scene of the 20’s and 30’s.more More Arrow

October 06, 2011 - Hello my friends, it has been a long week and it is not over yet. I am still rambling. That includes visiting the sick and shut-ins, such as James “Biddy” Wood in Harbor Hospital, who is, at press time, still in hospice on the 4th floor. He is still wiggling his toes and plucking his finger when he hears music playing. He recognizes and lights up like a Christmas tree when all of the musicians, friends and nightclub patrons stop by to say hello.more More Arrow
