The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation recently announced its decision to contribute over $15 million to the second phase of a large redevelopment plan near Johns Hopkins medical center, reports from baltimoresun.com report.
The money, which will be given out over five years, will support existing programs of the East Baltimore Development Inc., initiatives for work force development and the nonprofit overseeing the project. Senior services and an education campus for children through eight grade are also apart of the foundation’s funding.
The $1.8 billion project combines privately owned medical research and technology facilities and senior housing with education and job-preparedness programs in East Baltimore. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed and 425 families were relocated to make way for the development project.
