Jean D. Hughes, 78 years old, Loving Mother & Friend

(May 2, 2009) - Jean D. (Keys) Hughes entered this life October 25, 1930 in Washington, DC, the only daughter of Nellie Keys. She entered into eternal rest on Sunday March 15, 2009.

Jean, a lifelong resident of Washington, DC grew up in the Ledtroit Park section of DC with her grandmother, mother and two aunts. She attended Mott Elementary and Shaw Jr. High Schools. She graduated from Dunbar High in 1948. Enrolling at Howard University in the Fall of 1948, it was there she met the man (Warren A. Hughes) who would be her partner for over 52 years.

Married in 1952, through their union God blessed them with two sons, Warren (Skip) and Derrick. Jean worked through the early years for both the U.S. Census Bureau and USIA (Voice of America). However, she left the government in 1966 to become a homemaker, which is what she loved most. Her other love was bridge. In the 1960’s, while playing party bridge with neighbors, she became an accomplished duplicate bridge player and loved her Washington Bride Unit and the Y-Bridgettes.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Warren (Skip) and Derrick, a loving daughter-in-law, Donnetta, two grandsons, Derrick, Jr. and Lance, three granddaughter, Cheri, Christy and Dana (Brian), three great grandchildren, Deija, Brian, Jr., and Thomas, first cousin Diane Keys Lee, and a host of relatives and friends.
