(September 29, 2009) - The Howard University Bison were on the losing end of the first ever meeting with Georgetown University’s Hoyas last season. But this year they made sure their city neighbors would taste defeat, even if it came in ugly fashion.

HU barely slipped past Georgetown, 14-11, during the second annual DC Cup at the Multi-Sports Field on Sept. 26. Howard was able to score two touchdowns, including a 35-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Floyd Haigler and a five-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Austin-Bruce.

But they also committed 14 penalties for 134 yards and could have lost if it wasn’t for the tough defensive unit’s tough play. Howard’s Ian Smith, a 6-foot, two-inch, 230-pound sophomore, recorded six tackles and a sack to help a Bison unit that caused three Georgetown turnovers.

The Hoyas couldn’t get their running game going against the Bison, rushing for a mere 45 total yards. Georgetown quarterback Isaiah Kempf passed for 232 yards, but he also tossed three interceptions into the hands of Howard’s Will Croner, Arando Jamison and Lanny Kelly.

The win was Howard’s first after a nine-game losing streak that extended back to the 2008 season.

The Bison (1-2 overall record) will now prepare for their home-opener against Winston-Salem State on Oct. 3.
