Iris Manning
Baltimore County Human Relations Employee
Iris Elizabeth Manning, daughter of the late William Mason Dodd, Sr. and the late Lillie B. Dodd and the beloved mother of Charlene Dickerson and Carlos Manning Sr., was called to glory on Sept. 20. She fought a lingering illness and left quietly in the comfort of her home in Turner Station, Dundalk, Md. Her son was at her side.
Iris was born in Roanoke, Va., and graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1939. She worked at the Glenn L. Martin Airplane Assembly until the plant closed. She then worked at the Baltimore County Tags and Permits from 1989 until 1993. In 1983, she was appointed to the Baltimore County Human Relations Commission until she retired in 1996.
For nearly 10 years she had lived without the companionship and love of her life, husband Charles “Chappie” Manning, who passed on in August 2002. Iris and "Chappie" were considered members of the first families of Turner Station, having been residents since 1945. They were both interested in the growth of the community and were active participants in its politics.
Iris was a member of Baltimore County’s Democratic Central Committee. Central Committee members are grass-roots level elected volunteers of the State Democratic Party who are dedicated to working to ensure the election of Democrats to public office. Iris worked diligently in this endeavor.
She found pleasure playing pinochle with several of her girlfriends after she attended church services on Sunday. She enjoyed traveling and would sponsor trips to North Carolina A&T for their homecoming celebrations.
Iris also enjoyed playing the slot machines at various casinos and sponsored trips to Foxwood Casino in Connecticut. Iris loved listening to her husband and son play the saxophone and would travel to the various jazz clubs to hear her son play. She loved to relax at her mobile home at President’s Wilderness Resort in Fredericksburg, Va., and spent many days there. Iris lived her life enjoying her family and helping others.
Besides her son and daughter, Iris leaves behind to celebrate her life a sister, Ruth Shelton; grandchildren, Carla Flournoy, Anita Manning, Carlos Manning Jr. and Lolita Manning; great grandchildren, Kayla A. Flournoy, Valencia Braswell, Reazealan N. Manning, Janae Harvin, Kimori N. Manning, Cyrah A. Jenkins and Cayden L. Jenkins; godchildren, Sharon Dungee and Rhonda Y. Payne and a host of friends and associates who will miss her dearly.
