(October 8, 2009) - Howard University’s Keith Pough was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week Monday for his outstanding performance in the Bison’s 7-3 win against Winston-Salem State University on Oct. 3.

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 225-pound red-shirt freshman from Orangeburg, S.C., roamed the field for 10 tackles -- six solo, two tackles for losses and two quarterback hurries. This marks the second time Pough, who leads Howard in tackles, has been named MEAC Rookie of the Week. Pough’s dominance was a key factor in the Bison’s defensive unit, limiting the Rams to only 139 offensive yards and a field goal.

With the Rams struggling to find the end zone, it only took Howard one touchdown score to earn its second straight win. Howard beat Georgetown, 24-14, last week to end a nine-game losing streak that extended back to the 2008 season.

Pough was the only Howard player this week to receive an individual award, but some of his teammates did make the MEAC honorable mention list. Among them was Howard receiver Willie Carter, a 6-foot, 2-inch, 190-pound sophomore from Denmark, S.C., who caught seven passes for 116 yards and the Bison’s only touchdown score. Bison defensive end Will Croner also received honorable mention for finishing with seven tackles, two sacks and three quarterback hurries.

The Bison will now prepare for a MEAC rival game against the Hampton Pirates on Oct. 10 in Hampton, Va.
