(October 21, 2009) - Bowie State Bulldogs head coach Damon Wilson was recently named the Central Interscholastic Athletic Association Coach of the Week for the second time this season.
He was honored after leading the Bulldogs to a 14-0 win against St. Paul’s College during Bowie State’s homecoming on Oct. 17.
“It’s a great honor to receive,” Coach Wilson told the AFRO. “But this honor is really a testament to my entire coaching staff, and the great job they’ve done to prepare the football team to perform at its best every week.”
As coach Wilson suggested, the Bulldogs have definitely performed amongst the best in nearly every game this season. Their shutout victory against St. Paul helped advance BSU to a 5-1 overall record (5-0 CIAA).
The Bulldogs have dominated on both offense and defense against nearly every opponent they’ve faced, and even scored 51 points in back-to-back weeks earlier in the season.
A muddy field caused by endless rain limited the offensive production of BSU on Oct. 17, but their strong defense was enough to get the win as they held St. Paul to only 28 total offensive yards.
Bowie State now sits at the top of the CIAA and is on pace to claim the conference season title. Coach Wilson still remembers how his team was predicted to finish seventh overall (fourth in the Eastern Division) in the CIAA at the 2009 Pre-Season Press Luncheon back in July.
“I told my guys that pre-season predictions don’t mean much when it comes to the regular season because no matter how you’re picked to finish, you still have to go out there and win games,” said Wilson.
“That’s why we are focused only on the game in front of us. We try to win one game at a time and so far that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.”
Bowie State will now try to win its sixth game of the season as they travel south to take on Virginia Union University on Oct. 24.
