(October 26, 2009) - The Morgan State Bears saw a five-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to the Delaware State Hornets, 35-22, who celebrated their homecoming in Dover, Delaware on Oct. 24.

The Bears’ defensive unit—which ranked No. 1 in points allowed in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference—gave up a season high 35 points to the Hornets, 21 more points that its season average.

Most of the Hornets’ points came in the second quarter as they quickly scored three touchdowns on three drives heading into halftime.

DSU did most of its damage on the ground as Hornets tailback J. Jones rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Hornets quarterback Anthony Glaud also rushed for a touchdown and passed for two touchdowns with 150 yards on 16 of 26 passes completed. He engineered a 57-yard drive, capped off by a 40-yard touchdown strike to wideout Donnell Dixon to help give DSU a 21-12 advantage at halftime.

While the Bears’ defense failed to meet its own expectations, the Hornets’ defense actually performed above their typical standards, forcing three turnovers on the day.

MSU quarterback Carlton Jackson passed for two touchdowns and rushed for 78 yards and another touchdown. But he was also limited to 143 passing yards on 14 of 26 pass completions, and tossed three interceptions into the hands of DSU’s secondary, including an interception by Hornets safety Avery Grant who raced back 15 yards for a defensive touchdown.

Bears star tailback Devan James was bottled up by Delaware State’s defense and only rushed for 40 yards.

Due to the MSU loss, South Carolina State is now the lone undefeated team remaining in the MEAC with a 4-0 conference record, 6-1 overall.

The Bears (5-2 overall, 3-1 conference) can still win the MEAC title, but they’ll more than likely have to win the final four games against Florida A&M (Oct. 31), Norfolk State (Nov. 7), S.C. State (Nov. 14) and Hampton (Nov. 21).
