Born in Somerset, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Barrett was the youngest of six children born to a loving household. Mrs. Barrett often expressed what a unique experience it was to grow up one of only a few black families in Somerset. In fact, according to family history, her father, who owned a scrap yard, often received mail addressed simply to “the colored junkman of Somerset.”
